This article discusses a cite found in Colorado that was originally determined to be the site of brutal murders and killings dated to about year 800.  During the dig, the group of archaeologists discovered that there were around 15000 bone fragments scattered throughout a pithouse. These were from at least 33 men and women.  The article then goes on to discuss the use of these establishments for terrible forms of torture which are detailed in the article.  The author proposes that the damage that is done to these victims was a means of controlling the population, by one making an example of others. Do you think this is the only use of this establishment or could there be another purpose? In addition why were these people chosen to be tortured? Did the fact that this culture did this kind of thing make them “savages” or are we possibly misunderstanding them?
