W4 Reflection: Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease where the body either doesn’t produce insulin at all or it doesn’t produce an adequate amount of insulin. People that suffer from diabetes are under constant pressure to maintain their blood sugar levels and make sure they are doing what they need to do in the event that their blood sugar is too low or too high. In many cases diabetes can consume their lives. They have to maintain a healthy diet and make sure that they are doing everything that they can to keep their disease under control.

Our culture often has a negative influence on people that have diabetes. Many people that think about diabetes think that you have to be extremely unhealthy or obese in order to develop it. In many cases this isn’t true; however in our culture it is difficult to maintain a healthy diet, which is important if you suffer from diabetes. Unhealthy foods are easier to obtain than healthier foods which makes it difficult to maintain a healthier diet.

Through doing this post and the activity I learned that the medical cost for treating diabetes on an every day basis is also really expensive. The materials needed to maintain this disease cost a lot and sometimes people may not be able to afford the materials needed to maintain their blood sugar and insulin levels. I don’t think that belief and healing can influence diabetes. If a person believes that they’re better it doesn’t influence this disease. They have to actively take care of themselves in order to get a handle on this disease. Just believing that you are better doesn’t actually mean that you are in this case. There is a lot that goes into living with diabetes because it is such a complex disease to have. There are many different factor that a person has to consider when they are living with this disease.
