Anthropology is the study of human beings on the basis of race, origin, society and culture and their relation to their surroundings, physical character and the social relations with other human beings. Physical or biological anthropology is a branch of anthropology which deals with the evolution of human beings, their instability and adaptations to their surroundings. The study of physical anthropology focuses on bone structures of human beings, their muscles and organs and how they are structured to ensure survival in the environment they exist, also their ability to reproduce and their nutrition (Larsen, 2014). The outstanding fact about biological anthropology is that it brings together all these functions to help understand the human condition
The American Anthropology Association was founded in the year 1902, and it is the largest organization in the world since it has the largest number of members interested in anthropology. The association was founded in the aim of promoting the science of anthropology, exhilarating and harmonizing the attempts of American anthropologists to encourage local and other societies faithful to anthropology. Also, the association acts a bond among American anthropologists and anthropologic organizations, and they encourage proclamation of substance regarding anthropology. According to the American Anthropology Association, biological anthropologists attempt to discover ways to which human beings conform to the environment they evolved in. To acquire such information, the anthropologists have to study human beings, both living and the dead, other primates such baboons and apes and human fossils.
Anthropology has a number of themes namely, scientism, evolution, cultural diversity and respect for ethnic pluralism. Scientism is the use of systematic procedures for obtaining knowledge that relies on the empirical evidence in the research and study of the social and natural phenomenon in human beings. Evolutionary theory in anthropology is used to express the origin of humankind and how human beings have managed to survive and evolve in the changes in their environments. Human beings have different ways of living depending on how they have adopted to their existing surroundings. Cultural diversity is a major factor in the study of anthropology since it explains how human beings have managed to form a concrete lifestyle. Ethnic pluralism is the recognition of cultural diversity in all ethnic groups existing in different geographical areas since the beginning of time and is an important factor in the study of anthropology.
Success in the study of biological anthropology has been achieved through the themes of anthropology. The use of scientific procedures in the study of biological anthropology has enabled anthropologists to make major milestones and discoveries in research of finding out the origin of humankind. Science has helped both anthropologists and archaeologists in establishing evidence that, human beings evolved from apes throughout the thousands and millions of years. The established evidence relate to the lifestyle and physical structures of the primate animals such as monkeys and apes (Larsen, 2014). Their cultural and social characteristics have lots of similarities with those of human beings and this adds up to the number of evidence that supports this fact. The American Anthropology Association has supported biological anthropologists throughout the years in their historical and important endeavors as they seek to find more evidence and make discoveries. The association has put in place various programs that have been useful to all the members of the association and helped those who have had challenges in their careers as anthropologists.
