Week 7- Blog 7

Humans are definitely continuing to evolve and will continue this process through the end of our extinction. We are evolving through each generation and evolution is a key component in making us as a species thrive in our environment and as the environment is changing so are we, in result. I will predict that as our environment is taking such a drastic turn in change, we as a species will have to adapt throughout time in order to survive and continue to reproduce.

As a psychology major, I think the behavioral and cultural evolution is a huge component that I have studied throughout my college experience. As humans this change in behavior and the culture in our society as drastically changed over time and history can confirm it. It’s also a little bit more evident to see even in our time here on earth, without using resources from the past. For example, our take on culture now is much different from our grandparents and much more different from their grandparents. This change in culture can be identified through a generational gap and is something we can identify ourselves. For example, our change in laws of marriage and sexuality has changed. I’m sure there are people in this class that can confirm that what is acceptable now in today’s society was most likely not in our grandparents, and maybe even some of our grandparents still hold to this traditional ideal. Sexuality for one is something that has become more widely accepted in this generation. Human culture encompasses ideas, behaviors, and artifacts that can be learned and transmitted between individuals and can change over time. As the formation of different languages and species develops there is a need for change in human culture. Therefore, as evolution progresses so does our human cultural traits.

As for a behavioral traits that are evolving in humans there is a wide range of diversity that has occurred over time. Human beings have a wide range of behavioral diversity, both within and between populations. People vary in their social, mating and parental behavior and have diverse and elaborate beliefs, traditions, norms and institutions. Between populations, some behavioral characteristics are observed in some populations and not others. Some of these traits might include drinking at different ages or the norm of graduating from college Other traits, such as eating and speaking, are found in all populations. However, they all tend to but exhibit variation in their expression; for example, the traditional food eaten or the mother tongue of languages. In other cases, behavior varies within populations, with individuals of different ages, sexes, vocation and social status being involved in different activities and having different roles, rights and responsibilities. This is seen in today’s society as we have a range of social classes and the behavior is diversified throughout each individual in each of their environments. Behavior also varies within individuals over the course of their lifetimes, and stable individual differences extend beyond that which can be attributed to differences between populations or subgroups. Diversity can be applied broadly to all of these aspects of behavioral variation. Behavioral diversity can be explained as encompassing the different and varied behavior patterns exhibited by human beings, both between and within populations, and the variation exhibited within and between individuals.

  1. Hi Madison, I enjoyed reading your blog post and found it to be very informative and a good look into the future of human evolution. I agree that as our environment changes, we will also change as a result and that we will have to learn to adapt to these changes. I like that you discussed a changed in culture between generations, you can definitely see this difference in marriage and sexuality norms nowadays. Like you said, a lot of today’s society would not have been accepted in our grandparents’ society, but our mindsets and opinions have evolved over time. I think this change in culture is one that has been beneficial if not necessary in order for the prosperity and freedom of our society to continue to thrive.
