Assignments & Grading

Blog Posts (10 pts each)

Every Wednesday you will be responsible for creating a blog post which is due by 11:59pm EST. Make sure you are creating a brand new post and not just “replying” to my posts.  Visit the tutorial in ‘Introduction and Welcome’ under SCHEDULE for instructions on the basics of posting a blog.  Make sure you categorize the post properly (week 1, week 2, etc.) and that you are publishing the post instead of just saving a draft – the tutorial will show you how to do this. One of the anthropology graduate students has set up tutorials so she will explain all and I think she did a great job!!

Your post should be thoughtful, respectful, grammatically correct, and address the questions that I give you for that particular post. Feel free to add pictures or post links to related articles or sites that you think the rest of the class might find interesting. The body of the post must meet the minimum word requirements for that particular blog, and WordPress counts for me, btw. Some of you might be more comfortable writing your blog as a Word document and copy and pasting it into your blog post area. Also having it in Word makes sure you do not lose it if something goes funky with your internet connection.

These are graded pass/fail – if you meet all the criteria you get all 10 points… if you miss something, fail to post on time (or at all) or post something offensive, you will receive zero points.

Once again, basic blog instructions in the ‘Introduction and Welcome’ page under SCHEDULE!

Blog responses/comments (10pts each)

Every Friday you will be responsible for commenting on another student’s blog post from that week which is due by 11:59pm EST. To do this, read through all the posts in the corresponding category (week 1, week 2, etc.) and find one that captures your interest and hit the “reply” button to write your response. NOTE that WEEK 1 is different (see the Week 1 Blog Assignment on the SCHEDULE).  You can talk about what you agree/disagree with, share a related experience, or suggest some outside materials that the original blogger might be interested in. You can comment on more than one blog.  Your response must reflect that you have read, seen the relevant materials, discussed by the student you are responding to in order to meet the basic criteria, so it is important to cite relevant details.

The same rules apply for blog responses as they do for blog posts (see above), and your responses will need to meet the word limit assigned for that weekAgain – be THOUGHTFUL and RESPECTFUL.

These responses are also graded as pass/fail – no late responses will be accepted so plan accordingly.  You will be able to drop your lowest OR miss one blog response.  You will only be graded on your 6 highest scoring blogs for a total of 60 pts.   I will typically doing grading on Monday and Tuesday of the previous weeks materials.  You can check ANGEL late Tuesday for the updated grades.

Comprehensive Essays (20 pts each)

Every Sunday you will be responsible for submitting a comprehensive essay on that week’s materials by 11:59 PM EST.  You will receive a series of guiding questions that help you in writing the essay.  All essays, with the exception of WEEK 1, will be a 3 to 5 page response (SINGLE-SPACED, 12 PT, Times New Roman font, 1 to 1.25 inch margins ONLY).  You may  use MS Word, MS Works, Wordperfect, Adobe PDF, or OpenOffice formats.

You will submit your paper into a dropbox on ANGEL that will typically be open from Wednesday to Sunday, with the exception of WEEK 1.

Your papers will be graded on three key areas.

1. Grammar and Spelling: complete sentences, no spelling errors.   You lose a ½ point for each one found.

2. Organization and internal logic: Please write in formal essay style with an introduction, thesis statement, discussion, and conclusion as the basic structure of your paper.  The organization of the paper should directly answer the question for the week and do so in a logical and organized manner that reflects an understanding of the material. You will need to cite materials.  All citations should be in parantheses, ( ), and use the following format for things:

Lecture Videos: (Week  1, lecture 2)

Movies: (Time Team America, Video ##) or (Ghosts of Macchu Picchu)

Web Pages: (http://bama.ua.edu/~alaarch/excavationsteps/exstep01.htm)

Articles: (Author, Year: Page Number) (also include the full citation of the article at the end of your paper. See the publications under ABOUT DR. NORDER for appropriate style.

Books: (Author, Year: Page Number) (also include the full citation of the article at the end of your paper. See the publications under ABOUT DR. NORDER for appropriate style.

Edited Volumes: (Author, Year: Page Number) (also include the full citation of the article at the end of your paper. See the publications under ABOUT DR. NORDER for appropriate style.

3. Comprehensiveness: While you may not be able to use everything from a given week in your response, the guiding questions will be written in a manner that indicates what the minimum expectation of material use for the week should be in your response.

As with blogs, you will be able to drop OR miss one of your essays.  You will be graded on your 6 highest scoring essays for a total of 120 pts.

Final Project (60 pts)

TBA in week three.

Late Policy

In general, late posts, responses and assignments are NOT ACCEPTED without an excused absence and will receive a grade of zero. Everything on ANGEL and WordPress is timestamped so I know exactly when something gets turned in.

There are no makeups without an excused absence.  Note that if you miss an assignment, you must contact me within a week of the date of that assignment to make it up.  If you do not, then the score will go to a zero.
