All Grades Are Now Entered!

08/19/16

Class is now officially over, and I have finished entering all grades for the semester. I have also put in the official 4.0 grading scale, so you should be able to see your final grade for this class. If you can’t, please let me know! (It is sometimes hard for me to see what the student view on D2L is.)

Please contact me with any questions, comment, or concerns at henry1ka [at] msu [dot] edu before 8:00pm on Sunday. I will be submitting grades to the registrar at 8:15 pm on Sunday.

Also, don’t forget to do your SIRS Formhttps://sirsonline.msu.edu. Please note that if you don’t complete a SIRS form or opt out through the website, the registrars office will withhold your grades for a week.

I hope you all have a great weekend, and a wonderful fall semester.

Thanks for a great class! 🙂

Have You Read This ENTIRE Page?

08/04/16

There were quite a few insightful and thoughtful posts and comments this week!

However, some of you have obviously not read everything on this page. A number of students got zero grades this week. Everything you need to know to do well on posts and comments is here.

Please also read the feedback on D2L. EVEN IF you get full points. A few of you were close to not getting credit for week four posts because you have not addressed the feedback from previous weeks in writing your subsequent posts. Last warning!

As always let me know if you have questions or concerns!

Week 6 Released Early

08/04/16

I have released Week 6 material early, because a few students had concerns about the earlier due dates. Week 7 has a lot less content, so I will release that at the normal time (Sunday evening or first thing Monday morning of Week 7).

Hopefully this will be helpful! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns about the last few weeks.

Finally, I should have grades from last week entered by tomorrow evening (Thursday).

Feedback and Notes on Posts & Comments

07/29/16

I have finished grading week 3 posts and comments and have some important notes. While there were a lot of really thoughtful and interesting posts this week, several students did not get credit this week because they did not do one or more of the following:

1) ENGAGE & CITE COURSE MATERIALS:

The point of the posts is to show that you have read/watched/listened to course materials, and that you can draw connections between them and your own ideas. If you do not cite and discuss course materials, you will not get credit. Please review the information below on how to do this, under the announcement titled “A Few Notes on Citations” from 07/07/16

2) FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE PROMPT

Many of you got sidetracked from the focus of the prompt this week (the relationship between science, religion and healing) and did not address the topic directly. You should be making an argument in these posts that is supported by class materials, NOT just summarizing materials, or just making an argument without backing it up with sources.  Address the main question(s) or point(s) from the prompt directly. Also, Posts should be 400 words MINIMUM not including citations, and Comments should be 200 words MINIMUM each.

3) EDIT YOUR WORK

There were a lot of typos, misspellings, grammar issues, and/or sentences that didn’t make sense this week. Please re-read and edit your work before you post.

4) READ MY FEEDBACK ON D2L

I often leave feedback/comments on D2L even if I don’t mark you down. Please read these. If I commented something on past assignments and see the same issue in grading your latest assignment, I will be more likely to give a zero (remember posts and comments are pass/fail).

5) CATEGORIZE YOUR POSTS

It takes a significant amount of time to hunt down un-categorized/mis-categorized posts. If you received a zero this week and did not have any feedback in D2L you probably did not properly categorize your post, so I didn’t see it. If you categorize it properly and send me an email before Monday at 11:59 pm, I will still offer you the chance to get points .

These things should not come as a surprise, as most of them are listed on the grading page page (under the Blog Grading heading about half way down the page) that you should have reviewed during week 1.

Also, please remember to check this page and the help page for answers before you email me. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you don’t find there.

Thanks & have a great weekend! 🙂

Comments & Grades

07/28/16

I have finished grading week 3 comments (POSTS will be graded by tomorrow at noon), and wanted to reiterate that comments should be 200 words each MINIMUM. There are several students who have not gotten points for a couple of weeks in a row because their comments are too short. Posts and comments are graded pass/fail per course policy.

If I mark you down, I do put an explanation on your grade item to let you know why, so please check your grades on D2L regularly. The messages I put in on items you did not get points for should help you to do better on future assignments. A couple of students were also having issues finding where to check their grades. Once you are on the ANP 370 course homepage in D2L, click on the assessments tab, and choose either grades or user progress from the dropdown list.

Feel free to contact me with further questions!

About Half Way Through!

07/27/16

We are about  half way through the semester!

This means, you probably want to be thinking about your Movie Review Assignment: DUE by MONDAY 8/15 @ 11:59pm EST. You can do it any time before then.

Please note that due dates for the last 2 weeks of class are not the standard Friday & Sunday times, and take this into consideration when planning your time.

REMINDER- Due dates for this week:

Week 4 Blog Post: Post Prompt – DUE by Friday 7/29 @ 11:59pm EST

Week 4 Blog Comments: DUE by Sunday 07/31 @ 11:59pm EST

I should have Week 3 posts and comments graded by Friday at noon.

Have a great rest of your week !

Week 3

07/18/16

It’s week three already!

Hopefully you are all getting used to the format of the class, and are enjoying the materials. As always, feel free to ask general questions on the Help page, or email me if you have a question about something specific to you.

Here are the assignments and due dates for this week:

Week 3 Blog Post: Prompt – DUE by Friday 7/22 @ 11:59pm EST

Week 3 Blog Comments: DUE by Sunday 7/24 @ 11:59pm EST.

I plan to have Week 2 posts and comments graded by Thursday evening. Please remember that when I first add assignments to the gradebook on D2L they will show zeroes for your grades, but this will change as soon as I enter your grades for the week.

Also, remember that your Movie Review Assignment is DUE by MONDAY 8/15 @ 11:59pm EST, but you can do it any time between now and then.

I hope you all have a great week!

NOTE on Grades:

07/12/16

I will try to post when I expect to have things graded on the announcements page at the beginning of each week. Once I add a grade item to the gradebook, it will show a zero for that grade until I enter a grade for you. Please try to be patient, and refrain from contacting me about your grade until after the time I say I will be done grading that item. Thanks!!

DUE This Week, Tips for Doing Well & Grading Update:

07/08/16

Happy Monday ANP 370 Students!! I hope you are enjoying the course so far.

I really want you to do well in this class, and so have a few reminders that will hopefully help with this goal.

For this week the following is due:
  1. Week 2 Blog Post: Post Prompt – DUE by Friday 7/15 @ 11:59pm EST
  2. Week 2 Blog Comments: DUE by Sunday 7/17 @ 11:59pm EST

I have also released your Movie Review Assignment Prompt. The Movie Review is DUE by MONDAY 8/15 @ 11:59pm EST, but you can do it any time between now and then.

Notes on Grading:

I am in the midst of grading all of the Intro and Week 1 Posts and Comments, and have some notes for the class as a whole to help you do well on Week 2 assignments:

  • Many of you did not refer to course materials directly and/or did not cite those materials properly if you did. There is more information on how to do this further down on the course announcements page (which you should be checking daily, especially on Mondays as I will almost always post on Sunday evenings or Mondays).
  • A number of you were under the word count for Posts and/or Comments. All posts from here on out should be at least 400 words, and each comment should be at least 200 words.
  • Some of you did not follow the directions quite closely enough, for instance–pretty much everyone talked about race for their Week 1 Post, but not everyone covered ethnicity directly (which was in the directions).

I was somewhat lenient on grades this week, but remember posts and comments are pass/fail. If you do not follow the directions, cite course materials, and meet the minimum word requirements for posts and comments you will not get credit.

I hope to be done grading Intro and  Week 1 Posts and Comments, and putting in points for your Display Names and Gravatars by Thursday. Let me know if you completed an assignment and don’t have a grade for it by Thursday evening.

Thanks!
Kehli

Don’t Forget to Categorize Your Posts!!

07/08/16

A few of you forgot to categorize your blog posts, so please go back and do this ASAP. It makes it hard for me to find your work, and increases the chance that I will miss grading your assignments. If you need help in doing this, re-watch the tutorial video on Posting & Commenting.

A Few Notes on Citations:

07/07/16

If you use ideas or text from a website, book, article, or any other place YOU MUST credit that source by citing it.

This includes course materials. If you use course materials you may use the date and author’s last name in parentheses after the material you are quoting or paraphrasing instead of doing a full Chicago Style citation at the end of your post/comment. For example: (Lauderdale, 2006). If you use a direct quote also include the page # (Lauderdale, 2006: 186-187).

Please use full Chicago Style citations for outside materials.

Even if you do not take exact words from a source, but you use their ideas or paraphrase what they said, you MUST cite where you got the information. If you are unclear on this AT ALL, review this link to MSU Library resources that will help you to better understand the importance of citations and avoiding plagiarism (there is a video and a PowerPoint as well as written rules):  http://libguides.lib.msu.edu/c.php?g=95726

Hello and Welcome to ANP 370: Culture Health & Illness!!

07/02/16

Please explore and read all of the tabs at the top of the course page starting with the About tab, and be sure to complete the list of assignments below by Friday, July 8th at 11:59 pm. You are also responsible for reading/watching course content for each section before you do your blog posts and comments. For this week click on the Schedule tab, read/watch everything on the Pre-Week 1 (available now) and Week 1-Culture Matters (to be released Monday) pages.

  • Profile Display Name: (see grading page for details) DUE by Friday 7/8 @ 11:59pm EST
  • Create your own Gravatar: (see grading page for details) DUE by Friday 7/8 @ 11:59pm EST
  • Intro Blog Post:
  • 2 Intro Blog Comments: DUE by Friday 7/8 @ 11:59pm EST
  • Week 1 Blog Post: Post Prompt – DUE by Friday 7/8 @ 11:59pm EST

I have also added all of the assignment due dates for this course to the D2L calendar. The only things that will be on D2L for this course are:

1) The information I sent you in my introduction email (under NEWS on the course home page for D2L), INCLUDING the password for the videos for this site–please do not share the password on WordPress or any other public forum!

2) The calendar with due dates if you would like to use it (but due dates are also listed on WordPress for each section/assignment)

3) The gradebook: this is where I will enter your grades and you can view them

I think that is all for now. If you have any questions please post them to the Help page on this site.

Have a great semester!

-Kehli

PS: The videos for the course are supposed to only require a password at this point, but a student has already told me that they encountered a request for a username also. The password should be the same regardless, but the username AND password information is available on the D2L news feed just in case.
