Michigan Archaeological Society Meeting 3/19

The next meeting of the year for the Upper Grand Valley Chapter of the Michigan Archaeological Society is Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at 6:30 p.m., in Baker 455.  Chapter Elections for the 2014-2015 year will occur at this meeting, and Eric Perkins from the Michigan Historical Museum will be presenting “Identifying U.S. Military Insignia and Gear for Archaeologists.”

Abstract:  As more work is done on turn-of-the-century and 20th century sites, archaeologists will be recovering military artifacts from a period that saw many changes in uniforms, insignia, and gear.  While 18th and 19th century military artifacts are fairly well-known, later military artifacts have received less attention.  This presentation will provide an overview of US. Military insignia and gear from the late-19th and 20th centuries, focusing on what is likely to be preserved in archaeological contexts.
