After learning the course, I understand the processes and reasons that human switched from hunting and gathering in small groups to settle communities and engage agriculture in large groups. I actually felt quite curious about that period. Therefore, I read some other books about ancient human’s culture in bookstore as well. After connecting all the contents and information, I signed with emotion…

Different from hunting and gathering, which making a living at wild plants and animals, production economy is much more progressive. Production economy roughly means human process land, feed livestock, and cultivate crops by utilizing production tools to increase the quantity of products. This is a great breakthrough in human’s history.

The emergence of agriculture actually was due to complex natural and cultural conditions. First, the pressure of population. During Mesolithic Age (the time between Paleolithic and Neolithic period), hunting and gathering cannot afford ancient human’s survival. Similar to the period that ancient human species have to leave trees, human in Mesolithic Age faced the problem concerning the survival of the whole species again. While they tried to think of a better way for living, the word “agriculture” came to their mind. Second, the climatic condition. Most of the early settlement located near the river, because water is necessary for food to grow. Third, the accumulation of knowledge. Through gathering, woman understand the regulation of growing of edible plants. Fourth, habit. In the condition of highly developed life pattern of hunting and gathering, human settled in a group. In this circumstance, they preferred to continue settling rather than separate to some more small groups and migrate. Fifth, the high technology of making tools. In week 7’s lecture, during the Paleolithic period, technology of human’s stone tools developed continuously by the time. Human had ability to create a useful tool for cultivation. Overall, the emergence of agriculture related to the accumulation of culture and technology.

The rise of state depends on many conditions as well. However, in my opinion, the statement “the emergence of agriculture eventually led to the rise of the state” is not specific or direct. The direct reason of the rise of the state is the greed. After agriculture appearing, human’s live experience some more changes. For example, the appearance of pottery. Difference of the singles forced social contradiction. For instance, the differences in wealth. Warfare appears due to social contradiction. Then, the emergence of crown…

As a result, the emergence of agriculture opens the pandora’s box. After that, the appearance of warfare, the rise of the state wouldn’t be stopped. However, agriculture itself wouldn’t force the rise of the state. Instead, the development of technologies, the intelligence of ancestors, the accumulate of knowledges…

In the long process of human’s development, they never know the ceaseless battles will happen in the future…
