The Peace & Justice Studies specialization has nine challenging areas of thematic study:

•  (1) Roots of War/Culture of Peace

•  (2) Power and Coercion:   Institutional Power, Ideological Power (Legitimation, Role of the Media, Power, Manufactured Consent,) Force.

•  (3) Conflict Resolution, Cooperation

•  (4) Environmental Justice

•  (5) Economic Justice:   Poverty and Privilege, Globalization, Exploitation, Social Class, International Aid

•  (6) Resistance and Social Movements:   Revolutions, Uprisings, Civil Resistance, Terrorism, Disobedience, Organizing and Activism

•  International Dimensions of Peace and Justice

•  (7a) International Law, Humanitarian Law/Human Rights Law;

•  (7b) Dimensions of Conflict:   Imperialism, Colonialism, Wars, Regional Conflicts Police Actions, Civil War, Border Violence

•  (7c) Intervention:   International Organizations, Peace Keeping, Crisis Management, Refugees and Internally Displaced People, Immigration

•  (7d) Militarism, (Nuclear) Disarmament, Arms Control, Treaties and Conventions

•  National Dimensions of Violence and Justice

•  (8a) Citizens Rights and State Responsibilities

•  (8b) Crime and Punishment (criminal justice, capital punishment)

•  (9) Group Violence and Justice:   Discrimination, Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Xenophobia, Ethnicity, Religion, Genocide, Ethnic Cleansing, Labor Unions, Language, Social Class, Prejudice, Rape, Assault, Recourse.

There are undoubtedly other courses that have a substantial P&J component and will be acceptable for the specialization.
