Overview of Excavation

Students spent eight weeks excavating at Saints’ Rest. Before the field school started, the faculty and teaching assistants went out with soil probes to determine where the walls of the building were. We marked them with small flags. We then opened excavation units outside of the dormitory, so that we could see what the natural soil looked like. Understanding this would help us recognize cultural strata later on. We then started excavating near the walls of the building, and eventually worked our way inside. As the excavations continued, we chose new excavation units based on what was already uncovered and what new questions had developed. By the end of eight weeks we had excavated 28 units, each one being 5 feet by 5 feet unless the sidewalks got in the way.
