Week 1 Activity Post

I have chosen to write about China.  I chose China because with such a large population, I am interested in what types of issues are present due to the large population.  Specifically, what health concerns are present.

China holds the world’s largest population. It has a current population of 1.420 billion. According to statistics from 2012, when the population was 1.377 billion – at that time, 6% of the population was under the age of 5 while 22% of the population was under the age of 18.  That percentage was a bit surprising to me. Though through learning about this topic, I speculate that these percentages could have been one of the reasons for the government to relax it’s one child per family law.  In 2016, the government now universally allows for each family to have two children.  As of 2012, the growth rate was 3.8% (from 1990 – 2012).  The expected growth rate was down to 1.9% for the years 2012 to 2030. Though current estimates have that number even lower.  One possible contributing factor, in spite of the relaxed child birth allowance, can be the vastly lower number of women in the population. There are an estimated 30 million more males than females.  There are governmental concerns that the population will not grow sufficiently to support its current economic standing.

There is a high value placed on education in China and the statistics support that value.  Statistics from 2012 show 99.8% of the population participating in primary school. The competition for higher education is quite fierce.  Additionally, Forbes states that 57.7% of the population is using the internet, giving tremendous access to global information.

I look forward to learning more about China and what possible issues that having such a large population can cause.
