The majority of public spending is spent on education followed by health and military. 71 percent of adult women in Malawi are literate and nearly half the women use contraceptives. When women are pregnant the majority see a doctor during pregnancy and at birth as well as following the birth, still one in 29 women die from maternal deaths. The ratio of richest to poorest people in Malawi is over 2 but 39.2 percent of total children receive education and the female education rate is higher than the male education rate.
