Prompt 1

Pseudo-science is essentially information that poses as true science conducted under the ethics of the scientific method and is based off of factual information, while in fact not doing so. Currently, the phenomena of pseudo-science is something that has plagued our almost all of our  modern media outlets.  The effects of pseudoscience on our modern world are not readily obvious as it disguises itself to be any other scientific information, however over time they have become and will continue to be extremely damaging to our society.  Pseudo-science has resulted in altering the way people perceive our world, and spread misinformation that drastically affects our treatment of the world.  Presently one of the most obvious examples of this would be global warming, many alternative news sources are constantly spewing out misinformation that drastically undermines years of factual and ironclad research done by scientists from around the world that confirms the presence and the effects of global warming. The results of this have been an extreme alteration in the way the public perceives the severity of global warming or even their belief in global warming in itself.  The consequence of this spread of misinformation is that the public does not recognize the very real threat that global warming has already had on our planet and the continued effects it is going to have on our Earth. Therefore the vast majority of the general public has been hesitant to or has not altered their habits to try and alleviate and combat some of the damaging effects that global warming has had on our planet.  Meaning that we continue to permanently damage our planet as we stand in defiance of real science by opting to believe the pseudoscience that is mass-produced and disturbed through almost all major media outlets, and numerous forms of social media.

In this sense, the effects of pseudoscience are very real and very negative on our societies. Through confusing the public and spreading damning misinformation they create chaos that makes it difficult for an unwilling and often times uninformed general public to ascertain from real science and pseudoscience. Unfortunately for things like global warming it has resulted in permanent damage to our planet that will be extremely difficult if not impossible to reverse.  The belief in pseudoscience changes the public perception of the world and makes it difficult for them to differentiate between true science and this false information.

  1. I really liked your post! I appreciate your emphasize on the dangers of believing pseudoscientific claims regarding global warming. You bring up great points about how our planet is crumbling under our feet but too many are hesitant to do something about it due to the misleading information about global warming being presented in media. Its so hard to tell what data can, and cannot, be trusted when you are not familiar with the concept of pseudoscience, and unfortunately most of the public is blinded by the false claims by alternative scientists due to their ignorance. Topics like global warming need to be taken seriously, they are life or death and time sensitive, like you had mentioned the earth might have gone through irreversible damage due to climate change. It is not only ignorant to ignore the factual information presented on the topic, but also disrespectful to the loads of research those real scientists have conducted. It is very crucial for people to be able to detect pseudoscience in order to guide them to a more reliable way of finding information.
