The Piltdown Man was a singe hoax that persisted for multiple years. The discovery of which was made by a man named Charles Dawson, a lawyer and part time scientist, in 1908. Starting with just the discovery of a skull fragment and then further discovery of additional parts in the years to come. I believe this was part of the success to this hoax, that the pieces were not all found at the same time, but rather planted and discovered over a few years. Additionally, there were multiple people involved in the hoax: a scientist and keeper of geology and scholar. The motives of these individuals were nationalism- the Piltdown Man put England on the map with a major discovery since they were the only ones without said discovery. Scientific ideology was another motivation since The Piltdown Man supported the brain centered theory. Lastly, both men desired fame and they got it through this hoax. I think people wanted to believe in this hoax because it was a really good thing for England as a country. They finally had their great discovery and it also supported a theory that did not have much evidence.

The Cardiff Giant was a different sort of hoax, as it resulted in replicas and is still fulfilling its motives today. This hoax was more short lived in the duration that people believed it was true. The Cardiff Giant was discovered by Stub Newell, a farmer, on his farmland in 1869. This discovery of giant-like remains instantly drew public attention and created lots of offers for money. Similar to the Piltdown Man, this hoax had multiple contributors that made it successful. Newell, P.T Barnham, who created his own replica and made tons of money, as well as George Hull who hatched the whole plan. The motives and goals of this hoax were twofold. For George Hull, the motive was ideology. He wanted to prove his point that people are gullible and will believe anything mentioned in the Bible -like giants having walked the planet. For everyone else involved, money was the main motivation, and they made lots. I think people wanted to believe in this hoax because it supports what is said in the Bible about the existence of giants at one point and because people are fascinated by obscure things. Even today people still go to see the Cardiff Giant despite knowing it is fake.

All in all, both hoaxes were motivated by money. However, each hoax also had individual motives unique to themselves. For the Piltdown Man hoax, nationalism. For the Cardiff Giant, ideology. Both were successful in part because there were multiple people behind the completion of the hoax. However, the Piltdown Man was extended over multiple years in that new discoveries were made over a few years, whereas the Cardiff Giant was short lived in being successful, but still reaps success despite being a known hoax.

Lastly, I agree that both hoaxes exemplify the self-corrective nature of science. In the end, despite help from multiple people and a period of being successful, through scientific analyses and testing, both hoaxes were proved to be hoaxes. The self-corrective nature of science implores that given enough time, the process of science will reveal validity or refute it.
