Discussion Post 3

It would be very difficult to scientifically test for the possible presence of extraterrestrial entities making contact with ancient human civilizations. The backbone of any scientific research is evidence, tangible facts that can be used to accumulate knowledge and draw conclusions about certain scientific aspects. Archaeology and anthropology are no exception to this rule, but because of the speculative nature of the fields, it is very easy to make claims about the past without having physical proof to back up such claims. In order to do an investigation regarding past human contact with alien species it would be imperative to look at archaeological features and evidence to support related claims. The problem with doing so is that a majority of the evidence that is used to cite extra-terrestrial contact also already typically has strong backing and support regarding the human past.

Take for example one of the cases brought up in Ancient Aliens season 10 episode 8. In this episode there is a discussion about an event known as the Arab Spring where thousands of artifacts and sites were looted and destroyed by terrorist groups. Theorists on the show attribute this war zone and the destruction of valuable archaeological artifacts to alien species changing the brain functions of humans to induce the portion of the brain that controls aggressive behaviors. These theorists take the evidence they have in front of them and use extreme speculation to draw conclusions that explain the actions of these terrorist groups. Many examples of this can be seen within the realm of pseudoarcheology, and it is a persisting problem with the “science” behind these ancient astronaut theories. Alien theorists completely fail to mention any of the proven history behind these sites regarding human culture, making their claims quite unreliable. The terrorist groups destroying many of the ancient sites had motives relating to religion and politics stemming from a cultural history that far exceeds the time when ancient aliens were to have made contact with human civilizations. Essentially, the study of pseudoarcheology comes down to speculation and interpretation of evidence. Archeology and the human past can boil down to speculation and interpretation of evidence, and that is why it is so easy for alien theorists to interject their opinions into what have already been proven facts. Regardless of the already accepted and established theories regarding human and cultural development, ancient astronaut theorists still find a way to raise suspicion among the general population as to how ancient civilizations were able to accomplish the amazing feats that they did with limited technological resources. It is easy to see how theorists are able to change the narrative of the human past to verify their superstitious beliefs that aliens were responsible for the leaps in human technology and evolution rather than the already proven scientific truth.
