Archaeology is the scientific study of human society through material culture in its context. Considering the time and effort archaeologists give to the study of history and making sure their evidence is credible. Not to mention the training and education that is necessary. Yes, it is their personal responsibility to counteract pseudoarchaeology. Not only does pseudoarchaeology damage the reputation of the archaeology field but many of the theories are rooted with racism and personal motivations rather than the truth. Especially because these narratives are so easily created by not only pseudoscientists but they are promoted and twisted for entertainment. The public can be easily swayed if people are claiming to be experts and are deliberately manipulating evidence to support their pseudoarchaeological theories. One obvious example is the History and Discovery Channel. Both which claim to be trustworthy, we can clearly see that their greed for views and money far outweighs their morals. They are partially responsible for the popularization of the idea that aliens instructed Egyptians and the Maya on how to build their pyramids. We have them creating and promoting shows that are anti-archaeological. In the case for Ancient Aliens we see so called “historians” and “archaeologists” making claims based on evidence they have taken out of context to suit their own agendas, and completely disregarding actual evidence and documentation that exists to explain these structures which they say were built by aliens. The most common pseudo archaeological theory we have discussed in our class is the argument that the people who built the pyramids and other architecture were too primitive and did not have the intelligence, technology or capabilities to have built them. Pseudoarchaeologists swear that academic institutions and archaeologists are keeping the truth hidden from the public. As archaeologists they are equipped and educated enough to be able to see through false claims and give factual information as to why it is incorrect. There are several archaeological specialities and depending on the claim it should be handled by an expert in that particular field. It is important that archaeologists have patience when dealing with pseudoarchaeology and be respectful while confronting these ideas. Several people are confused by these ideas and making sure they get their information from the correct sources will be helpful. Some ways that archaeologists could help counteracting pseudoarchaeology would be recommending trustworthy authors, documentaries, and having conversations with the general public. Encouraging the public to analyze and question where these claims are coming from and who are making them can also help people search for proper information. Rather than easily trusting what a TV show or pseudoarchaeologists is claiming they can come up with their own conclusions. It’s also important for the public to note that when these claims are being made they are always from people who are less than qualified and have no experience. We are in an era where social media is influential. Having archaeologists appear on credible media sources would be helpful because the information would reach larger audiences and little by little these pseudo archaeological ideas will be dismantled.
