Week 7 Activity Post

This class has really taught me so much. I really enjoyed learning about different areas of women’s health. I liked how this class also made us take a look at our lives and environment about certain health issues. Additionally, I learned a lot from reading other people’s posts through their own experiences and stories.  I also enjoyed reading other people’s posts about a health issue in their chosen country. It was also really eye opening reading about different difficulties that women face. Some of the things I enjoyed learning about were about different culture and rituals, life cycle events and about race and gender. One of the most interesting things I learned in this course was about different birthing practices. For example, I was unaware that in the Netherlands, almost 60% of women chose to give birth at home and when researchers looked at perinatal mortality between home and hospital birth there was no significant difference. I was surprised to learn that medicalizing birth did not show a significant advantage for the health of mother and baby.Additionally, I have learned so much about my chosen country, Afghanistan. While I knew that women’s life in this country was not good, I did not realize just how badly women are treated there. One aspect of women’s lives here that really surprised me was that because of Afghan culture, women could not be treated by a male medical attendant and that men would rather their wives die than be treated by a male doctor. I really enjoyed this course and  I would not want to change anything about it. I really liked how the weekly activities led up to the final post. It made working on the final post easy. Additionally I really enjoyed being able to read and interact with other people’s posts.

  1. I’m glad that you liked the course, and that you didn’t find it too similar to ANP 370. The situation regarding woman’s rights in Afghanistan is very frightening, especially given how quickly their rights deteriorated after the Taliban. There is a lot that can be learned from looking at that situation. I was really happy to have you in another class, and I wish you luck with this next year!
