Week 7: Activity Post

I definitely enjoyed this class much more than I was expecting to. I really liked learning about all the different perspectives of medicine through the different theoretical models. This is one of the only classes that doesn’t just take a biomedical approach and I really enjoyed that. One of my favorite topics we covered were the different birthing practices around the world. I thought it was fascinating to learn the different ways in which the world views giving birth. I also really liked learning the different practices in which women give birth. With America being so focused on biomed, it was fascinating to learn that it is just as safe to give birth at home with a midwife as it is to go to the hospital. I really think that more people should do research into the different medical avenues that are available instead of just going to what is the norm for everyone. One other aspect of the class I liked was picking a country to learn about. It made it feel like I had an input into what I was learning and helped keep me more interested in an online class. One thing I think could be done better for the future I think would be to highlight some of the key concepts of the class. I know that all of the lecture videos and pdfs are required every week, but when there are so many, sometimes it was hard to determine which ones were the main focus and which ones were supplemental.

  1. If you really liked the approach this course took in terms of being critical of the biomedical model, I really encourage you to take our departments ANP 370 course, it’s a medical anthropology course and it looks at different health issues around the world and interrogates with using critical medical anthropology.
