Undergraduate Becca Albert publishes prestigious article
The Department of Anthropology would like to congratulate undergraduate Becca Albert on her outstanding research. She is the Anthropology Senior of the Year, an award given yearly by our department to a graduating senior. Last week she won first place in her section at the Michigan State University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum, and she is lead author on a brand new American Antiquity article entitled “Earliest Microbotanical Evidence for Maize in the Northern Lake Michigan Basin.” Great job on all of you hard work Becca!

Dr. Rowenn Kalman receives Gill-Chin Lim Award
Our own recent graduate and adjunct faculty, Dr. Rowenn Kalman has been awarded the Gill-Chin Lim Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Global Studies from the MSU International Studies and Programs. This award, given every academic year, acknowledges a graduate student for their outstanding doctoral dissertation. The dissertation submitted had to be completed the preceding year of the award, and must focus on global studies. This award is named after the late Dr. Gill-Chin Lim, MSU Professor of Geography and Urban Planning and Dean of International Studies and Programs. Alumnae Dr. Mary Ann Ladia to visit March 28 and 29
Mary Ann J. Ladia, PhD currently serves as University Researcher III of the Institute of Clinical Epidemiology at the National Institutes of Health and Faculty of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology of the College of Medicine at the University of the Philippines Manila. Dr. Ladia received her PhD from the Department of Anthropology in 2008 under the guidance of Drs. Judy Pugh and Linda Hunt, as adviser and committee member, respectively. Dr. Stacey Camp receives S3 Grant
Dr. Stacey Camp, Dr. Lynne Goldstein (Anthropology), and Dr. Leigh Graves Wolf (College of Education) with the Archaeology STEM Camp Pilot Project will use a grant from Science and Society at State (S3) to run a two-day archaeology camp this June for 15 International Baccalaureate (IB) high school students on Michigan State University’s campus. Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational foundation that offers internationally respected curricula and programming. IB programs are growing in popularity, representing 90,000 students worldwide. Professor Ethan Watrall Co-PI on $1.47 Million Grant from Mellon Foundation
The Department of Anthropology is very pleased to announce that Professor Ethan Watrall is one of the Principal Investigators that has been awarded a major grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project, entitled Enslaved: People of the Historical Slave Trade, is collaboration with MATRIX: The Center for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences (where Watrall serves as Associate Director) and the Department of History. The $1.47 million grant will fund the first 18-month phase of a multi-phase plan to build and launch an online platform that will link and provide access to millions of pieces of data about that transatlantic slave trade…

MSU Forensic Anthropology Lab Brings Closure to Families
Dr. Joe Hefner of the MSU Forensic Anthropology Lab, housed within the Department of Anthropology, was recently featured on ABC 12 News, a local Mid-Michigan subsidiary. When human remains are found by the Michigan State Police, they are brought to the MSU Forensic Anthropology Lab for identification, as was the case this fall when remains were found in both Saginaw and Flint. Hefner and his team of colleagues and graduate students work tirelessly to create a biological profile of the unidentified individual so that comparisons can be made to existing medical records. Dr. William (Bill) Lovis has been named the inaugural Editor for a new book series, Midwest Archaeological Perspectives, launched by a partnership between the Midwest Archaeological Conference, Inc. and the University of Notre Dame Press. LEADR lab featured in the State News
The Lab for the Education and Advancement in Digital Research (LEADR) was recently featured in the State News, highlighting Anthropology graduate and undergraduate students. This lab is a collaboration between the Department of History, Department of Anthropology, and MATRIX: The Center for Digital Humanities & Social Sciences to allow students to engage with digital tools and technologies and to learn new digital pedagogies.
